History
The International Sailing Federation (ISAF), formerly the International Yacht Racing Union, inaugurated the World Sailor of the Year awards in 1994.
Two awards are given annually, to a male sailor/crew and a female sailor/crew. Nominations may be made by anyone. A few of the nominees are then shortlisted for the award.
ISAF members vote for the winners. The awards are formally presented during the ISAF's annual conference in November.
Since 2001, Rolex has sponsored the awards, and a Rolex timepiece is presented to each winner, along with the ISAF trophy.
