History

The first world snowboarding championships were staged by the International Snowboarding Federation (ISF) in 1993, when the ISF was the world governing body for the sport. The ISF championships were held every two years.

When the International Olympic Committee decided that snowboarding should become an Olympic sport beginning with the 1998 games, the ISF didn't have enough member countries for the sport to qualify.

The IOC got around that problem by defining snowboarding as a skiing discipline and making the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) the international governing body. Thus empowered, the FIS began holding world snowboarding championships in 1996.

The two organizations held competing world championships in 1997 and 1999, but the ISF went out of business after 1999.
