History

The first world surfing championships were held in Manly, Australia, in 1964. The International Surfing Federation (ISF) was organized during the meet. The ISF staged world championships in 1965 and 1966 and then, beginning in 1968, at two-year intervals through 1972.

Then the sport was split into amateur and professional factions, rendering the ISF ineffective. In 1976, International Professional Surfing was to govern the pro tour and the ISF was replaced by the International Surfing Association (ISA) as the governing body for amateur surfing. The ISA has held world championships in even-numbered years since 1978.
