Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.

If my mother put on a helmet and shoulder pads and a uniform that wasn't the same as the one I was wearing, I'd run over her if she was in my way. And I love my mother.

It is better to give a lick than receive one. If anybody got in my way, I tried to run right through them.

Jackson, Phil

NBA player and coach

A former teammate told me that we have, as a team, the collective intelligence of an orangutan. I cannot say that I disagree.

Playing sports is orgasmic, instinctive. If you're going to be a good athlete, you cannot think.

I gave it my body and mind, but I have kept my soul.

If you meet the Buddha in the lane, feed him the ball.

Jackson, Reggie

NBA player and coach

 Fans don't boo nobodies.

The only reason I don't like playing in the World Series is I can't watch myself play.

The only way I'm going to get a Gold Glove is with a can of spray paint.

Blind people come to the park just to hear him pitch.
[on Tom Seaver]

The will to win is worthless if you don't get paid for it.

The balls aren't the same balls, the bats aren't the same length, and it's further between bases.
[on the pressure of the playoffs]

If I played there, they'd name a candy bar after me.
[referring to New York City, before he joined the Yankees]

Isaacs, Stan

Sportswriter

Sports is the opiate of the American masses.

Top of Page

Jacobsen, Peter

Professional golfer

When a pro hits it left to right, it's called a fade. When an amateur hits it left to right, it's called a slice.
[Asked to explain the difference between amateur and professional golfers]

James, William

Pragmatist philosopher

Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they've got a second.

Top of Page

Jeffcoat, Hal

Major league outfielder/pitcher

When you first sign that contract as a kid, they tell you your whole future is ahead of you. But they forget to tell you that your future stops at thirty-five.

Top of Page

Jeffries, Jim

Heavyweight champion

When there are no white men left to fight, I will quit the business. . . I am determined not to take a chance of losing the championship to a Negro.

Top of Page

Jenner, Bruce

Olympic decathlete

I always felt that my greatest asset was not my physical ability, it was my mental ability.

The most challenging aspect of the decathlon is not the events themselves, but how you train to become the best 100-meter runner you are on the same day that you're the best 1,500-meter runner.

Top of Page

Jennings, Lynn

Cross-country runner

I'm sort of a nature geek. I embrace the weather changes. They are what makes me endure as an athlete. You get wet and dirty and cold, and experience the whole spectrum of sensations.

Mental will is a muscle that needs exercise, just like muscles of the body.

Johansson, Ingemar

Heavyweight champion

Everybody wants a piece of the cake, but my cake has no slices.

Top of Page

Johns, Tommy

When they operated, I told them to put in a Koufax fastball. They did, but it was Mrs. Koufax's.
[after arm surgery]

Johnson, Alex

Major league outfielder

I hit them when I want to; you hit them when you can.
[to a teammate in the minor leagues]

Top of Page

Johnson, Bill "Tiger"

NFL player and coach

Statistics are a salve. You rub them on your wounds after you lose and you feel a little better.

Top of Page

Johnson, Cecil

NFL linebacker

Playing middle linebacker is like walking through a lion's cage in a three-piece porkchop suit.

Top of Page

Johnson, Jack

First black heavyweight champion

It amuses me to hear this talk of [Jim] Jeffries claiming the championship. Why, when a Mayor leaves office, he's an ex-Mayor, isn't he? When a champion leaves the ring he's an ex-champion. Well, that is Jeffries; if he wants to try to get the championship back then I'm willing to take him on.

I only hope the colored people of the world will not be like the French. History tells us that when Napoleon was winning all his victories the French were with him, but when he lost, the people turned against him. When Jack Johnson meets defeat, I want the colored people to like and love me the same as when I was the champion.

Johnson, Kevin

NBA player

In the long run, it's the bus driver, the mailman, the clerk in the store, that are the role models, that will have the respect of the kids, not people like me in what I do. That's just a quick fix.

Johnson, Lyndon

U. S. President

To see some of our best-educated boys spending an afternoon knocking each other down, while thousands cheer them on, hardly gives a picture of a peace-loving nation.

Top of Page

Johnson, Magic

NBA player

Ask not what your teammates can do for you. Ask what you can do for your teammates.

Everybody on a championship team doesn't get publicity, but everybody can say he's a champion.

I discovered as a kid that the way to win was not to have a bunch of guys who could shoot 20-foot jump shots. What we'd do is get five average guys who could shoot layups. Then we'd pass and win.

Johnson, Phil

College basketball coach

I don't think we've been beaten by officials more than five times this season.
[when his Weber State team was 18-5]

Top of Page

Johnson, Walter

Hall of Fame pitcher

The beanball is one of the meanest things on Earth and no decent fellow would use it. The beanball is a potential murderer. If I were a batter and thought the pitcher really tried to bean me, I'd be inclined to wait for him outside the park with a baseball bat.

You can't hit what you can't see.

Johnston, Marshall

NHL coach

A good definition of a good coach is this: a good coach takes a good team and wins with it.

Top of Page

Jones, Ben

If a horse is no good, sell him for a dog. Then shoot the dog.

Top of Page

Jones, Bobby

Hall of Fame Golfer

On the golf course, a man may be the dogged victim of inexorable fate, be struck down by an appalling stroke of tragedy.

It is nothing new or original to say that golf is played one stroke at a time. But it took me many years to realize it.

A great champion has to have a willingness to take the mental punishment you have to take. That's why Ben Hogan is so great. He tries harder than anyone else.

You play a game with which I am not familiar.

Some people think they are concentrating when they're merely worrying.

In other jobs, you get old, big deal. In football, you get old, you're fired. That's what happened to me. Time got me. Damned time.

Top of Page

Jones, Dub

NFL halfback

The beauty of the game of football is that so often you are called upon to do something beyond your capabilities, and you do it.

Top of Page

Jones, K. C.

Basketball player and coach

People see what they want to see, and most pro basketball fans have limited vision after they get past the scoring column. They look to see how many points a player got and that's how they judge him. It makes no sense, but it's true.

Jones, Perry

Tennis player

It's not how you hold your racket, it's how you hold your mind.

Top of Page

Jones, Robert Trent

Golf course architect

Augusta National is overexposed but not overrated. There are courses around the country as good, but they don't have the same exposure. That's because the Masters is Scarborough Fair, the gathering of eagles. Everyone wants to make a trip to Mecca.

Every hole should be a difficult par and a comfortable bogey.

Jones, T. A. D.

Yale football coach

Gentlemen, you are about to play Harvard for Yale. Never again in your lives will you do anything so important.

Top of Page

Jordan, Henry

[Vince] Lombardi treats us all the same--like dogs.

Show me an All-Pro offensive tackle and I'll show you a holder.

Top of Page

Jordan, Michael

You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.

I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

I never looked at the consequences of missing a big shot. When you think about the consequences you always think of a negative result.

I can accept failure, but I can't accept not trying.

Top of Page

Jordan, Shug

A coach must simply resign himself to the fact that he is no longer involved with the educational process, but with entertainment.

Top of Page

Joyner-Kersee, Jackie

Olympic heptathlete

Age is no barrier. It's a limitation you put on your mind.

Ask any athlete: We all hurt at times. I'm asking my body to go through seven different tasks. To ask it not to ache would be too much.
